Antioxidants are substances that scavenge free radicals- damaging compounds in the body that alter cells and even cause cell death. Scientists believe that free radicals contribute to the aging process as well as the development of a number of health problems including cancer and heart disease. The antioxidant effects of polyphenols appear to be greater than vitamin C and 20 times stronger than vitamin E. most importantly, it is the antioxidant effects that people seem so enthralled with to help skin wrinkles, aging and also hair growth. Recently, it was reported that EGCG may be useful in the prevention or treatment of androgenic alopecia by selectively inhabiting 5α-reductase activity. This enzyme converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). There are two forms of 5α-reductase activity. Type I (in higher amounts around the body) and type II (which is thought to be responsible for most of DHT formed in the hair follicle). The type I enzyme is found mostly in sebaceous glands and makes seborrhea and greasy hair. Green tea is thought to effect 5α-reductase activity type I enzyme, so it may be useful in treatment of seborrhea. According to the study the application of green tea appeared to slow down the over proliferation by acting on an enzyme called caspase 14-an enzyme that seems to be involved in epithelial cell differentiation and will be useful as possible treatment for dandruff.
